Hardly anybody believed that privatization of Ukrtelecom would after all become a reality. Until the very last day, the information space abounded in various versions of cancellation or suspension of the process. However, the main event of 2011 for our Company took place: 92.79% of the Ukrtelecom shares passed into the ownership of the Austrian investors. The state of Ukraine received over 10 billion hryvnyas, and Ukrtelecom got a real chance to make a comeback to the leading positions in the telecommunication sector. At this stage, in order to achieve success, the Company is required to ensure, together with the investor, dynamic development and strengthening of its standing on the telecommunication market.
All necessary prerequisites for that are there, since the Company’s management and employees, without being distracted with external factors and the change of ownership, were dedicatedly fulfilling their professional duties throughout the year. Despite ever more tough competition, not always conducted correctly by certain players in the market, we managed to maintain fast pace of connection to the OGO! fixed broadband Internet access service. Moreover, we made the Internet proposals even more attractive and transparent for the subscribers, which enabled us to increase the subscriber base up to over 1.3 million users!
As is known, last summer the Meeting of Shareholders passed the decision to funnel the mobile assets out of Ukrtelecom into a separate company. A good many of people interpreted such decision as termination of the mobile communication development altogether. However, the results proved to be quite the opposite: the level of connections remained stable throughout the year, while the mobile communication revenues grew.
2011 was hardly the first year when we had to acknowledge a downward trend in the revenues from and volume of the local, long-distance and international telephony services. However, on the whole, the situation is under control, and we managed not to allow a slump in those indicators, which was prognosticated by some experts.
The Company’s high technological and organizational level is well known beyond the boundaries of Ukraine, and, consequently, in May 2011 Ukrtelecom was granted the status of the official provider of telecommunication services of the UEFA Euro 2012™ tournament. In the course of the second half of 2011, a major part of the preparatory work was completed, which made it possible to accomplish modernization and expansion of our Company’s network with due account for the UEFA requirements as to holding the European soccer championship. As a result, the Ukrtelecom network significantly increased its capacities, including the information throughput, which contributed to the improvement of quality of rendering services to all subscribers.
Naturally, the new tasks and challenges faced by Ukrtelecom required also radical structural changes in the Company. This process started in 2011 with the sole purpose of ensuring efficient management that would correspond to the market realities.
We appreciate the input of all employees of the Company who worked at a high professional level in different regions of Ukraine. Indeed, it is only due to the common contribution of our great collective that Ukrtelecom continues to further develop and improve its business processes and quality of the service provided.
